A Clinical Study of the Nasal Bone Fractures

Abstract
We have clinically analysed 68 cases of the nasal fractures who had visited the department of Otolaryngology of the Seoul Red Cross Hospital from January 1991 to December 1991.
1) The number of the patients who had visited the Otolaryngologic department via OPD were 4432 Among them nasal fracture cases were 48(1.1%)
The number of the patients who had visited the department via emergency room were 572 Among them nasal bone fracture cases were 20(3.5%).
2) Of the 68 cases, 55 cases(80.8%) were male and 13 cases(19.1%) were female. The ratio between male and female was 4:1
3) In the age incidence. 3rd decade was most commonly involved in 26 cases(38.2%), followed by 2nd decade I 16 cases(23.5%), and 4th decade in 14 cses(20.6%).
4) The most highest incidence was 10~29 age-group in male(61.8%) of all cases.
5) Seasonal incidence showed the most common occurrence in spring(41.2%), and autumn(29.4%) in next.
6) Monthly incidence showed common occurrence in May, Marh and September in order.
7) Causes of trauma were as follows:
(1) Human trouble (30 cases, 44.2%)
(a) Underunken 27 cases(39.8%)
(b) Drunken 3 canses(4.4%)
(2) Occupational 3 cases(4.4%)
(3) Sports 10 cases(14.7%)
(4) Traffic accident 7 cases(10.3%)
(5) Slip or fall-down (18 cases, 26.5%)
(a) Undrunken 10 cases(14.7%)
(b) Drunken 8 cases(11.8%)
8) The types of nasal bone fracture were classified by physical exam. And X-ray finding as follows:
(1) Linear fracture 24 cases(35.3%)
(2) Depressed fracture 27 cases(39.7%)
(3) Displaced fracture 10 cases(14.7%)
(4) Compound fracture 2 cases(4.3%)
(5) Open Fracture 5 cases(7.4%)
9) Nasal bone fractures were treated by closed reduction in 54 cases, rhinoplasty in 1 case, conservatively in 3 cases.
